Over the top Chardonnay? Yes it is but….

Not another over the top buttery Chardonnay, I hear you cry, yes it is but and It’s a big but (if you pardon the expression) this is an over the top quality Chardonnay from the ever-reliable Luis Felipe Edwards and I would quite happily, drink this whenever.

Very rarely I buy a case of the same wine, it has to be pretty special for me to do so but every now and then there comes a wine that I have to buy more than one and from the first time I tried this at an in-store tasting at my local Majestic outlet, I  immediately ordered a 6 bottles.

Chardonnay did seem to have a bad reputation in the past, especially the over oaked ones and there are some pretty hefty full-on, in your face bad ones out there. Nowadays Chardonnay’s are generally much better, yes there are still richly oaked, buttery bottles about and this is one of them, although this has some nice fresh acidity to balance it out.

As you can see from the picture above it’s a rich golden colour and this immediately gives you an idea of how this is going to smell and taste. Aromas of, for me, what smelt like freshly baked Frangipane tart, there was also some smoke and very ripe tropical fruit. Taste-wise, again, you get a mouthful of intense tropical fruit along with toasty vanilla with a smoky aftertaste. There is some acidity which brings a freshness but overall this is pretty lavish and in your face, all in a good way I hasten to add.

Yes it’s rich, yes it’s full on and yes it’s delicious, a very nice Chilean Chardonnay you must try. My daughter who is a pretty fussy white wine drinker immediately exclaimed on first sip “that’s nice”, good enough for me !
