Always loved Yalumba, every time I go back to a bottle it’s almost like pulling on an old comfortable pair of slippers and this Old Vine Grenache is just one of those wines, It just feels warm and comforting, especially in these troubling times of the Corona Virus epidemic where we are all uncertain of what the future holds. What’s not uncertain is the quality of this wine as with most of Yalumba bottles this just delivers.
I’ve had this bottle in my rack for a while now and I must say the time was probably right to drink it now. Very light almost transparent in colour in the glass with a faded rim. The nose was a cross between candied strawberry fruit and a herbal, almost medicinal smell, there was also a hint of incense. On first sip it wasn’t as fruity but it had developed some lovely tertiary flavours of sweet candy, cinnamon, along with some earthiness, leather, oak and herbal characteristics, while the Tannins have been muted, leaving a beautifully matured drink and although it may have lost some of its fruit the secondary flavours more than made up for it.
Whenever you open a bottle of Yalumba you know what you’re going to get, a quality wine from a quality producer and this is no exception although not as fruit forward and it reminded me of a Pinot Noir in flavour had enough about it to end up being an extremely enjoyable and somewhat interesting wine.
