I make no excuses for featuring another excellent Spanish red, the ‘Lasendal’ made by ‘Celler de Capçanes’ from the Montsant DO (Denominación de Origen) in the Province of Tarragona, Catalonia. This time a blend of predominantly Garnacha with a small percentage of Syrah.
Bit of a gentle giant this one, even if it is a little muscular, rich and fruity, along with a hefty 14.5% abv, but it all seems to be wrapped up in a soft cosy comfort blanket and ends up being a delight to drink.
Lasendal Selecció 2019
Rich and fruity, pretty much sums this up, initially, lots of mouth-watering acidity featuring dark berries, cherry and cassis. This is quickly followed by something more herbaceous along with smoke, tobacco, liquorice and a nice hit of oak which didn’t seem too intrusive. Tannins are there but soft and there is a touch of sweetness on the finish that appeals.
As I said earlier although this is a big wine, but it has a lovely gentle softness about it and will endear itself to a lot of people, but beware the high alcohol can creep up on you pretty quickly after a few glasses, as we found out, before we knew it the bottle was empty!
